Zusammenfassung

Aesculapian presence in Panamá, toward the end of the XIXth century, framed within political and ideological contexts, reflects diverse expectations: The lack of clergy to attend spiritual needs of the parishes. Shortage of teachers to man training of professionals who would exploit natural resources of the Colombian province, and the particular interests of the order concerning the establishment of permanent centers to carry out its educational policies. Consistently, when these interests became less pejorative and divergent, the exodus of Aesculapian "padres"- monks provoked by changing ideology is about to take place from the isthmus territory.
