Abstract

The promotion of gender equality and women’s rights in the overcoming of inequality, poverty and social exclusion is a challenge facing many countries today. In Colombia, women constitute the majority of the population and are also among those most severely affected by the impacts of socio-political violence. The following article examines the findings of a questionnaire in which women community leaders in the municipality of Yumbo, Colombia, were asked about the characteristics of their leadership, their education and their participation in the community. In-depth consideration of their responses bears witness to the importance of social education in the processes of women’s empowerment of women in community development.
